Not Too Late, edited by Rebecca Solnit and Thelma Young Lutunatabua.
The first resource is an insightful and hopeful book of short essays called Not Too Late. Each essay is written by a climate activist, from their own experiences, and grounded in their place in the world.
The writers start from a place of hope, and that doing something is always valuable. For a taste of the book, here are three thoughtful ideas:
“Difficult is not the same as impossible” Rebecca Solnit
“We cannot honestly know if our actions will be enough, but that doesn’t mean we can’t try.” Thelma Young Lutunatabua
“Because we are talking about a climate commitment, not a single climate action, that means you don’t have to get it exactly right every time. This is a practice, not a perfect.” Marie Annalise Heglar
You could read this book on your own, perhaps as a morning or evening meditation. It would also be great for a weekly virtual or in-person climate book club. For each essay, consider these two questions:
- What in this essay gives me hope?
- What was difficult to read? Sit with your thoughts, and don’t try to “fix” them.
As you work through the book, think about the following scenario. When you are finished the book, write or tell your future story:
Put yourself 10-20 years into the future and write or tell the story of how you changed your life to respond to the climate emergency. What do you want that story to be? What will your life be like? What will the world be like?
